The Women in Wine Leadership Symposium (WWLS) is in its sixth year, with a mission to empower and educate women in the wine industry through a series of panel discussions and wine tastings.

The WWLS, hosted by The Winebow Group, is the first event of its kind with winemakers from around the world, sommeliers, retailers, educators, and journalists.

Madeline Triffon joined Plum Market in 2011 as the in-house Master Sommelier. Plum Market is a full-service grocery retailer with stores in Southeastern  Michigan and Metro Chicago. Madeline directs wine tasting events, hand selects wines for in-store and online retail sales, and serves as a corporate wine educator. Madeline is one of 147 professionals who have earned the title Master Sommelier in North America; of these, 23 are women. Read full spotlight »

Keynote Speaker
Analisa Torres serves as a judge on United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She joined the court in 2013 after being nominated by President Barack Obama. At the time of nomination, Torres was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, having been elected in 2011, for a 14-year term. Prior to that, she served on the Criminal Court and the Civil Court.

Anna Beninger is a co-author of Catalyst’s global longitudinal study of high-potential employees, and speaks extensively on this research in both virtual and in-person events. She is taking a lead role in developing new research on the challenges and opportunities for women in STEM industries.

Molly D. Shepard is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Leader’s Edge/Leaders By Design, a company dedicated to the advancement of executive and high-potential leaders. She has more than 30 years of experience in career counseling, leadership development, executive coaching and executive search. Through her leadership as Chairman, President and Co-founder of Manchester Inc.

Based in Sonoma, California, Elaine Chukan Brown travels extensively keeping up with developments in wine, particularly in the United States. She serves as the American Specialist for JancisRobinson.com, is a contributing writer to Wine & Spirits, and a columnist for Wine Business Monthly. Her work has also been featured in The World of Fine Wine, MensHealth.com, San Francisco Magazine, and appears on her own website.

Following her studies at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and a semester abroad in Dijon, France, Carrie found herself in New York City where, behind the bar, she discovered her love for wine and transitioned into a management position at Artisanal Bistro where she enriched her knowledge about the marriage of food and wine with their renowned cheese program.

Gretchen Thomas serves as Wine & Spirits Director for Barteca Restaurant Group, overseeing all wine, spirits and beer selections for both Barcelona Wine Bar & Restaurant and bartaco concepts, as well as seasonal cocktail creations, wine and mixology training and development, and beverage-themed events including wine dinners, wine classes and cocktail classes.

Verónica has a Business Administration degree from Universidad Católica of Chile. She entered to the business as a Commercial Assistant in 2008, where she showcased a strong commitment that led her to be Head of Marketing by 2012. This year she will take a new challenge: Deputy Manager of Marketing and Exports.

In 2015, the executive was awarded as one of 100 female leaders of the country, due to her outstanding participation in the Association of Family Businesses (AEF.)

Nancy Irelan is the co-owner and winemaker for Red Tail Ridge Winery (RTR).  RTR is an 8,500 case boutique winery in the Finger Lakes (FLX) of New York, specializing in production of cool climate red, white and sparkling wines. Nancy was previously employed by E&J Gallo Winery as their VP of Viticulture & Enology Research and Development.  Nancy received her PhD in grape genetics while working in the Viticulture and Enology Department at UC-Davis.

Since completing the Bachelor of Wine Science from Charles Sturt University in 1986, Janice McDonald has spent considerable time making wine and brewing beer. She is the Chief Winemaker at Burch Family Wines, the largest family owned winery in Western Australia with vineyard holdings and wineries in the Great Southern and Margaret River, crushing 4,000 tonnes of premium to super premium grapes…read full bio »

As Meri likes to say, “everything I am and everything I have, I owe to wine.” She grew up in the small town of Fittà, in the hills of the Soave Classico area and surrounded by the best vineyards in the designation. In 1982, Suavia was created from an idea her parents had had for some time. Tessari was only seven years old at the time, but she immediately felt part of this family adventure and started to form a stronger link with the winery and the area—a link she shared with her sisters.
